Trouble Free Winter Driving Tips

by: Carter Gregg

Hopefully trouble free. But just in case, here's some tips to help reduce the risk of winter driving problems. These things can be checked by a do-it-yourselfer. But if you're not comfortable have a trained technician check them out.

If you have any drivability, hard starting, loss of power or rough idle, get it checked before the cold weather. Cold weather only makes these things worse. Have the cooling system checked to make sure the coolant is up to par. If it's time to replace the fluid, have it flushed and refilled. While you're at it, check for any signs of leaks. (If you're doing this yourself, make sure the engine is completely cooled before removing the radiator cap.)

Put on a set of new windshield wipers. Nothing worse than driving in rain or snow and not being able to see. Worn or torn wipers do absolutely no good. Oh yeah, don't forget the rear wiper if you have one. Make sure your heater / defroster are working. Again not being able to see and being cold is not the ideal way to travel.

The battery should be tested. If it's on it's last leg, it only takes one good cold spell to finish it off. Also have the charging system checked. If checking the battery yourself make sure to wear the proper eye and hand protection as the battery has corrosive chemicals.

Tire, tires, tires. What good are tire if they have no tread left? Inspect tires for remaining tread, uneven wear, cupping, any cuts in the sidewalls. Set the tire pressure to the correct level. Tires should be cool when this is done. Remember to inspect the spare tire as well and make sure the jack is working properly. One thing a lot of people never think to look for is their wheel lock key.

Keep a "survival kit" in trunk. Boots, gloves, blanket, flares, sand or cat litter, chains, and some energy bars, flashlight that works, shovel. While we can't predict any car trouble on the road, it's nice to be prepared when the unexpected happens.
